In August 2024, a fire broke out in the west wing of Somerset House, requiring 125 firefighters to tackle the blaze. Thanks to robust fire procedures, the building was evacuated promptly and no injuries reported. The building did, however, suffer significant damage, both from the fire and the water used to tackle it.
MSMR were appointed to assist in the repair and refurbishment alongside contractor Coniston. Works comprised the reinstatement of lost or damaged fabric while incorporating improvements to fire protection and thermal performance. Structural timber repairs using traditional carpentry techniques, maintaining the breathability of traditional roof build-up, and accommodating the reinstated lath and plaster linings presented complex technical delivery.
Floors were replaced locally, again using traditional techniques, and doors and windows were either refurbished or replaced. Lime plaster was reinstated throughout and all finishes and fittings were replaced, including washrooms and kitchens.
These essential woks also presented an opportunity to enhance the building’s long-term utility. A number of rooms that had drifted into back-of-house use, though originally conceived as high-status spaces, were refurbished to provide high-quality office accommodation.
